Companies accepted for Accreditation from the BBB must adhere to the BBB’s Code of Business Practices, a comprehensive set of policies, procedures and best practices for representing trustworthiness in the marketplace. The code is built on the BBB Standards for Trust, which calls for building trust, embodying integrity, advertising honestly and telling the truth, being transparent, honoring promises, being responsive and safeguarding privacy.
How You Can Use the BBB to Check Out Companies
The Better Business Bureau gives out letter grade ratings to its member companies based upon a number of criteria. Letter ratings range from A+ (highest) to F (lowest), or in some cases NR or “No Rating” if there is insufficient information. The goal is to be an “A+” member
The BBB ratings represent the organization’s opinion on how the business is likely to interact with its customers, and is based on significant information obtained about the business. Rating elements include:
- A business’s complaint history with the BBB
- Type of business
- Time in business
- Transparent business practices
- Failure to honor commitments to the BBB
- Licensing and government actions know to the BBB
- Advertising issues known to the BBB
Rating criteria do NOT include customer reviews.

Customers can check out a business through the BBB by viewing a business profile, noting a rating, and reading a complaint history if one exists. It also allows customers to leave reviews or lodge complaints regarding service.
